Novelsmithing was originally just class notes for a novel writing class I taught at New Mexico State
University at Carlsbad. On a whim, I decided to put it on the Internet, and since it discussed the insight in to the creative
process provided by Jungian psychology, I decided to call it Jungian Novel Writing. It was online for some eight years.
During that time, I received many favorable responses to the material, and also some requests for hardcopy version. I found out that some instructors were using the material in their classes. It all indicated that it was time for a change in format. Late in 2008, I had a professional editor go through it, and so began the lengthy process of getting it in shape for publication. I had always been a little uneasy about the title, but had never come up with a suitable alternate. Then, sometime before Christmas 2008, I came up with the blacksmith metaphor and changed the title to Novelsmithing. Novelsmithing is about craft, so relating it to the quintessential craftsman seemed a natural connection.
